Sell or publish
your app in Extella
Extella is a desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux with its own store. Apps from the store run on the user's computer. You publish your app from your own Extella account, under your name, and set the price yourself, or make it free.
Who it is for
- Authors of web apps that run in a browser: they open in an Extella window as an ordinary app.
- Authors of native desktop apps: you install them into Extella by the Agent Standards installer rules.
- Authors of closed-source native apps with signed builds and their own licensing: they come in as a referral listing, see below.
- Authors of free and open-source apps: they are welcome, with no fees.
Two ways to be in the store
Store listing
Web apps and open-source apps.
- The app opens inside the Extella window.
- The user buys it in the Extella store.
- 70% of every sale goes to you. Steps, money and payouts are described below.
Referral listing
Closed-source native apps: signed and notarized builds, your own licensing and updates.
- The listing is free. Its installer downloads your official installer as it is and installs it on the user's computer.
- The user launches the app from the Extella desktop. It opens in its own window, not inside the Extella window, and the listing says so.
- The user buys Pro in your own checkout, through a link with ?ref=extella.
- You handle payment, refunds and support. Once a month you send us a sales report and pay Extella 30% of the sales that came through that link.
- The same rule applies to any free listing whose paid part (Pro, plans, licences, subscriptions) is sold on your own site: it is a referral listing. Its buy or pricing link must carry Extella's mark (?ref=extella, utm_source=extella, or your affiliate link for Extella), and you pay Extella 30% of the sales that come through it, once a month with a short report.
- A free listing without such a link stays in the store, but we do not promote it or include it in collections.
- We need no source code and no signing credentials.
- Selling pre-issued license keys through Extella can also be discussed.
How it works in 5 steps
- 01Install Extella
Download Extella for Mac, Windows or Linux and create an account. Your listing and your income will be tied to this account.
- 02Put your app into Extella
A web app opens in an Extella window. A native app is installed by the installer canon of Agent Standards. For a referral listing, the installer fetches your official installer. If you get stuck, write to us and we help.
- 03Create a listing and set the price
You create the listing from your own account. The price is in credits, or zero for a free app. A referral listing is always free in the store, and the price of Pro is set in your own checkout. Set the price before the first installs: see Updates below.
- 04Check the private pre-release
A new listing starts as a private pre-release that only you can see. Open it, install it, check that it works.
- 05Make it public
When you are ready, you publish it. From then on anyone in the Extella store can find and get it.
Money
- This section is about store listings. For a referral listing the money goes through your checkout, see Two ways to be in the store.
- 70% of every sale goes to you, 30% to Extella. Our 30% goes into marketing and supporting the apps, to find them an audience and buyers.
- Prices are in credits. 10,000 credits = USD 15, so USD 10 is about 6,667 credits.
- A purchase is one-time. There are no subscriptions in the store yet.
- There are no other fees. Free apps pay nothing, except a referral listing for the sales through its link.
- Apps under GPL or AGPL are listed free, with the source of the build published next to the listing.
- It is not exclusive: you keep distributing your app any other way you like.
Payouts
- Payouts are made by hand, once a week. They are not automatic yet.
- The usual method is a bank transfer in USD. We need the account holder's name, the account number, the bank and branch, and the SWIFT code. Your bank may charge its own fee. A card payout is possible case by case.
- The minimum payout is USD 100. To check that the details work, we can send a small test payout below the minimum first.
- Refunds, chargebacks and taxes on your income are on you.
Updates
- To update, you upload a new version to your listing.
- A web app opens in its latest version the next time the user opens it, without reinstalling.
- Everyone who already got the app, including for free, gets later versions without paying again, even if you raise the price.
- The price applies to the whole listing, not to one version. So set the price before the first installs.
- We checked this with web apps. For native apps with an installer it has not been checked yet.
What is not available yet
- Subscriptions. The store has one-time purchases only. An app can ask the user to confirm a credit transfer in an Extella window each time; we have not tried this in a real app.
- Your own license keys, and a purchase receipt your own server can check. This is in development. A purchase check for apps and installers, with the user's token, exists.
- Mobile apps.
- Automatic payouts.
Questions
- How many users does Extella have?
- We are a startup: about 1,000 registered users so far, and three large companies plan to bring in 30 to 100 managers each. We cannot guarantee traffic or installs, but we do everything we can: bringing buyers to apps is our business.
- Who publishes the app?
- You do, from your own Extella account. The listing is under your name and the income is yours. We help with the first upload if you need it.
- Do you take closed-source native apps?
- Yes, as a referral listing. Your signed installer is installed as it is, the app opens in its own window, and Pro is sold in your own checkout. We need no source code.
- My app is free, the paid plan is on my site. Do I owe anything?
- Only for sales that come from Extella. Such a listing is a referral listing: the buy or pricing link carries Extella's mark (?ref=extella, utm_source=extella, or your affiliate link for Extella), and once a month you send a short report and pay Extella 30% of the sales through that link. Without such a link the listing stays in the store, but we do not promote it or include it in collections.
- Do I need to sign my app?
- Extella itself is signed, and apps inside it run without their own signature on Mac, Windows and Linux. We do not sign builds that run outside Extella. In a referral listing your own signed build is used.
- Can users get a standalone installer without Extella?
- No. Apps from the store run inside Extella. You can still distribute your app outside the store as before. A referral listing installs your own standalone app.
- What happens to my app if Extella shuts down?
- The store copies of apps stop working together with Extella. Your app outside the store is not affected, and neither is an app installed through a referral listing.
- Can we talk on a call?
- We work in writing. Write to anvar@chariotlab.com with your question and a link to your app, and we answer in writing.
